People marched through the city dressed in 17th-century clothing reminiscent of what Guy Fawkes would have worn when he plotted to blow up Parliament on November 5.

Some were dressed in traditional royal attire and others had skulls painted on their faces.

The parade, for which the East Sussex town is famous, was led by a float with a Guy Fawkes effigy and giant flaming effigies, followed by the crowd carrying flaming devil sticks.

Members of the procession marched to a huge bonfire where they burned the effigy of Guy Fawkes in front of thousands of onlookers.

Lewes Bonfire Night is the UK’s biggest celebration, organized by six local bonfire societies, each with their own fireworks, bonfire sites, costumes and processions.

The first recorded event was in 1795.

The parade commemorates Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, as well as the 17 Protestant martyrs burned alive in the 1550s in the center of Lewes, who are represented by 17 burning crosses.

The wider public has been warned by police not to travel to Sussex for the exhibition due to overcrowding concerns.

Those living outside of Lewes can watch live video coverage of the event on Rocket FM as a way to get involved in the festivities.
