Even more curious was an incident involving a street sign that fell from a pole and cut the head of a bystander.
“The sign was not put up by city officials. We are investigating what happened here,” said Wahab Onitiri, Director of Public Works. “It’s just not the kind of rod we use, definitely not the kind of work we do.”
The revelation followed a freak incident at the corner of Cleveland and Gladstone avenues when a street sign dislodged and hit resident Milton Najera on the head.
Monday’s incident shook Nahera. Blood splashed the pavement. A Trenton police car drove by just as the incident occurred. The police called emergency medical services, which transported the injured Nahera to the Regional Medical Center of Capital Health. Nahera needed several staples to close the head wound.
Onitiri said police returned the sign to public works and officers returned on Tuesday. Workers secured a new sign on the opposite corner.
“We are investigating what happened here. Maybe the contractor that is repairing the street did this. We just don’t know,” Onitiri explained.
