State legislators call into question State Police, DCFS on the care of children who have been abused – WBRZ

Baton Rouge – State legislators had many questions about agencies responsible for protecting children.

The members of the Senate Committee on Women and Children say they have seen children who have been sexually abused to not receive the necessary care.

State Senator Heather Cloud, R-Turkey Creek, says she is worried that money is spent without accountability.

“Children continue to fall through the cracks and money we invest to save them and change the trajectory of our lives to protect them will not go to them,” Cloud said. “This goes to all these entities and the formations are not all responsible.”

On Tuesday, questions were asked about where there were consistent gaps in providing care for children who were sexually abused.

Belinda Murphy with Louisiana State Police says challenges arise when a child is removed from their homes, but there is no room for them.

“After all, we’re talking about money and establishments where we can put children,” Murphy said.

Cloud said he wanted to make sure that the entities receiving state funding use the money in the best interest of the state.
