Starmer calls for a more in -depth defense cooperation with the European Union – Irvine Times

The prime minister told colleagues from the European Union that there should be increased military cooperation and greater industrial cooperation to strengthen the defense of the continent.

His comments came when Europe was confronted to look at how to respond to Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

The US President has threatened to take over Greenland, a territory that is part of the Denmark Kingdom, warned of the possibility of slaps at European Union goods rates and demanded increased defense costs by NATO members on the continent.

Sir Keyer addressed EU leaders during dinner in Brussels, where he became the first Prime Minister of the United Kingdom to attend a meeting of the European Council after Brexit.

He said, “We need to deepen cooperation in order to protect ourselves from state threats and sabotage, including in underwater infrastructure.”

In January, the government revealed that the royal submarine of the royal fleet of nuclear power was used to warn the Russian spy ship Yantar, which was caught engaged in the “critical underwater infrastructure of the United Kingdom”.

Sir Keyer told the leaders in Brussels that they also need to “explore the greater cooperation on missions and operations, as we do with our operations in the Red Sea and our work to train Ukrainian troops.”

The prime minister, who insists on closer defense and security relationships as part of his “reset” in relations with the EU, has also called for more military research and development work, where the United Kingdom has “unique skills”.

He also proposed measures to improve military mobility and logistics and suggested that the EU and the United Kingdom “deepen our industrial cooperation” – a warning against “fragmentation” in the block.

“We will be more successful in building the European defense sector and will contribute more to our own protection if we work together,” he said.
