South Carolina Senate Adopted a Voucher Bill for Vouchers for Private Schools – ABC News 4

Columbia, SC (WPDE) – The South Carolina Senate adopted a bill on Tuesday, allowing parents to receive vouchers for private schools.

The K-12 education scholarship will use funding from South Carolina Education Lottery to fund scholarships for private schools.

In September, the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned part of the Law on the Trust Fund for Educational Scholarships, a similar measure that allowed parents to use state money for private schools.

Some legislators believe that this last bill will have a legitimate challenge because it uses lottery money to fund scholarships.

“What we are looking at now is to finance it through a different fund, a different flow of revenue that does not go through the common fund,” said Republican Senator Hembre, Region 28 (Hori County) in December. “So it really changes the structure of it to deal with the court’s concern, but the essence of it, the purpose of it will still be achieved.”

The bill had its third reading on Tuesday and passed with a vote of 31-9. The bill is now heading for the house.

The South Carolina Education Association (SCEA) released a statement shortly after the bill passed, calling it a non -constitutional scheme for the use of public lottery funds for the support of private schools.
