Marion Bauman, Jr., was executed Friday night for the murder of a young mother of Dorchester. He is the first person to be executed in the United States this year.
Bauman was declared dead by a doctor at 18:27 at the Shiroka Reka Correctional Institution, the site of the South Carolina Death Chamber.
Bauman is performed through a deadly injection. On Thursday, he decided not to petition South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster for pardon after his final complaints before the US Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal of the fourth round failed.
He was the third person to be executed in South Carolina as executions resumed in 2024 after a 13-year pause.
In his latest statement, read by a lawyer and friend Boyd Young, Bauman said: “I did not kill Martin. I am innocent of the crimes I am here to die. “
Bauman was sentenced to death for shooting and murder of Martin on the night of February 16, 2001, according to the testimony of his trial.
He returned the next night, dragging her body from the forest and stuffing him into the trunk of her son escorts of Ford, who then set fire to the testimony.
Martin was shot in the back and head. She was killed five days before her son Tyler’s second birthday.
Bauman and Martin had gone to high school together and their families socialized in the nearby braided community of Braville in Dorchester County.
“I know that Candy’s family is in pain, they are justifiably angry. If my death brings them some relief and ability to focus on good times And funny stories, then I guess this will serve a goal. I hope they find peace, “Bowman said in a statement that was reported by media witnesses that they had taken three minutes to read.
Bauman’s reported motive for the murder has changed over the years, as witnesses to his original process said Bauman killed Martin because she owed him money. The court documents filed during his complaint claim that Bauman plans to rob a house and killed Martin when he raised paranoids that he was carrying a wire.
In the process, Bauman was linked to the crime of witnesses, including one who said he saw Bauman shoot Martin at the back of the head. A second witness testified that the next day he saw Bauman’s body drag Martin’s body out of the forest, put him in her car and set him on fire. Other witnesses who testified against Bowman included members of his family, who helped order a semi -automatic pistol.
The jury only took two and a half hours to find a bowman guilty.
But Bauman maintains his innocence and recent complaints have raised questions about the power of evidence used to condemn it.
His lawyers claim in documents that prosecutors in his original process failed to submit evidence of an eyewitness, including suspected recognition, which obviously made an informant in prison that he was actually Martin’s killer. Obviously, there was also psychological and memory problems that were not revealed to defense.
Prosecutors have also hidden evidence that another key witness testified in exchange for the declined charges that have not been raised, according to court records.
Bauman’s lawyers also claim that one of his original lawyers “infected” the process with his own racist beliefs about Bauman.
But the courts rejected these complaints, deciding here, there is no evidence that his lawyer has mourned the proceedings and found sufficient evidence to maintain Bauman’s sentence.
The execution witnessed Young, Director of the Chrysti Shain Communication Department, a sled and chief deputy attachment agent of the 1st round Kelly Laplante service. Three media members were also present. None of Bauman or Martin’s families are present at the execution.
Bauman’s calls have attracted updated attention to the deadly process of injecting South Carolina. In the complaint, Bauman said there was insufficient information about the process. Information on the deadly injection process and the medicines used cannot be disclosed in accordance with the Restrictive Shield Act.
Previous submission by the State Department of correction shows that the deadly injection is carried out by a single dose of pentobarbital, a powerful sedative that causes high -dose suffocation. This reflects the federal protocol, Shain told a press conference on Friday night after the execution. On January 16, the US Department of Justice canceled its protocol calling for the use of Pentobarbital.
As in the previous two executions, media witnesses described the deadly injection that is delivered to Bowman from the IV line administered from another room. Bauman seems to breathe a lot for a minute before his breath grows. His breathing seemed to stop after about three minutes.
For her last meal, which is served on Wednesday, Bauman asked for fried seafood, including shrimp, fish and oysters, chicken wings and offers, onions, rings, banana pudding and German chocolate cake. He drinks cranberry juice and pineapple.
As the execution took place, approximately two dozen protesters gathered outside the fence around the campus of the Broad River River’s correction ministry in Colombia. Some prayed as others removed with signs at passing cars. A woman raised a sign saying “While I breathe, I hope,” the translation of the Latin motto of South Carolina and the title of one of Bauman’s poems.
At Death Row, where Bauman spent nearly 23 years, he began poetry. In more than 50 poems gathered by supporters, he writes about the love, hope and the past of time.
Last poem, read as part of his statement, Bauman asked, “Did I take a last breath or a sigh of relief?”
