A bilateral group of senators in South Carolina has introduced a bill this week to ban smoking in the car with a child’s presence.
South Carolina Darol Jackson, Democrat, said it was aimed at protecting children from the harmful effects of second -hand smoke and is similar to the legislation that is already in force in a dozen other states.
“I think it’s time to have a serious discussion, with South Carolina joining these other states. Many are the southern states,” Jackson said.

“As a father and grandfather, I believe we have an obligation to create a healthier future for the next generation,” Jackson said. “This legislation is not in the punishment of smokers; but to ensure that our children can grow in an environment free from unnecessary health risks.”
The bill would make an illegal person to smoke a tobacco product in a motor vehicle with a passenger under the age of 12. It continues to outline the “tobacco product” as a product that contains tobacco and is intended for consumption of people.
