Virginia beach-February is a month of library lovers and libraries across the country encourage their long-time and new patrons to celebrate.
Lisa Varga, CEO of the Virginia Library Association, said the easiest way to show your love for your library is by registering for a library card if you don’t have one.
For people who want to do more, Varga called on them to inform their local civil servants how important the library is for them.
“There are so many things that libraries do that many of our financial persons, for whom the decision -making persons do not have to know because there is so much to watch,” Varga said. “So, if you are someone who has taken advantage of a hot spot on WiFi, the opportunity to borrow materials that you could not otherwise afford, inform people that you are enjoying and evaluating your public library.”
There are 94 public library systems across the country. This ranges from one construction to multi -brand systems.
One study found that 63% of libraries were funded through a local government or district, while 29% were funded through an independent library area.
Varga said that libraries are important for those who are looking for an accessible way to do academic research – and the fight against the epidemic of loneliness. She said it was vital for the information to remain free.
“We are a clear feature in every community,” Varga said, “and it is really important that access to information and access to resources is shared and publicly accessible to people. “
The first lending library in the US was founded in the city of Franklin, Massachusetts. The residents of Franklin asked Benjamin Franklin, the name of the city, to donate a bell to the city.
Instead, Franklin donated a collection of books to the city, believing that “meaning” is more important than “sound”. The residents of the city voted to make the books freely available to all their citizens.
