Shooting at Crabtree Mall | Jaquez Anthony Brown, arrested in parking garage incident, now faces charges in the case – ABC11 Raleigh-Durham

RALEIGH, NC (WTVD) — At least 20 vehicles were damaged during a shootout in the Crabtree Valley Mall parking lot, according to a prosecutor in the case.

It all happened Saturday around 1:30 p.m. on the first floor of the parking garage on the Creedmoor Road side of the mall.

The 24-year-old arrested after the shooting, Jaquez Anthony Brown, has since been formally charged with the crime. He also appeared in court on Monday.

The Raleigh Police Department said Jaquez Anthony Brown was “directly involved” in the incident at Crabtree Valley Mall.

Brown faces a felony charge of discharging a weapon into an inhabited property.

In court Monday, a prosecutor asked for Brown’s bail to be increased because of the seriousness of the charges.

“At least 20 cars were shot up during this OK Corral-style shootout between two rival gangs,” the prosecutor said.

At least one of the vehicles damaged in the shooting had people inside, including a 15-year-old.

When officers arrived at the scene Saturday, they found multiple shell casings and vehicles damaged by the gunshots. However, no one was injured in the shooting.

Brown was taken into custody at the time and held on outstanding warrants out of Durham for assault on a female and sending threats. The second suspect sped away from the garage, hitting another vehicle in the process, and has not yet been identified or arrested.

ABC11 spoke with someone who works at the mall and said they heard multiple gunshots.

“First we heard gunfire. It sounded like about six to seven shots from a machine gun. I told everyone to get away from the windows, I went out into the street, I looked, we heard two more shots. We got off, went back inside. Then we heard no police sirens or anything yet, so we grabbed our ARs and came out here and we’re ready to go to war,” Kenneth Tyerman said.
