Several streets in the center of Wichita will open for a two -way trip by the end of this month, according to the city.

The city began to turn Emporia, Topeka, English, market and main streets between Kelloge and 13th street this year.

Emporia, Topeka, English and main streets are expected to open for two -way traffic by the end of February, with the end of the market aimed at spring.

“In the meantime, you will continue to see crews working in the area to prepare for these conversions,” said Mayor Lily Wu during her weekly media briefing on Thursday.

The city said in a post on the X on Thursday that conversions will be completed when time allows the city’s performers to paint new markings on the streets.

A city spokesman also said he would probably make a message before the change.

The recently converted streets have been mostly one -way streets for several years with the intention of helping the flow of traffic in and outside the nucleus in the city center. According to the city, the transformation will be more fascinated for the movement of vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles.

The conversion is part of the city’s concept plan in the center of the streets, which was approved by the Council in 2023.

This plan also includes the eventual implementation of what is called “road diets”, on the streets of Broadway, Waterman and William. Road diets reduce the number of vehicle alleys in an attempt to slow down traffic to make the streets more motor and pedestrian.
