Selinsgrove, Pa.-Compassionate Rail Authority of Seda-Cog (JRA) has accepted a grant of $ 90,000 from the greener plus from the Ministry of Environment.

The funds will be used to stabilize the eroding bank of the influx of Penns Creek along the industrial road of Selinsgrove, which works next to the University of University in Suskehana.

JRA will collaborate with the University of Suscahana, Chesapeake Conservancy and North Shore Railroad Company for the project aimed to decorate the community; Support environmental stability; and increasing economic stability by maintaining rail loading.

According to Stephen, the CEO of JRA, the bank erosion is active and ugly and contributes to the flow of the sludge down the stream. If it continues without repair, the railway service on the route can be compromised in a large storm.

“We are glad to get this grant and to correct a continuous problem of erosion created by accelerated runoff caused by upward development,” added Beattie.

Erosion has deteriorated due to several factors and dates back to the 1960s, when the flow is upright. The process of changing the flow and development of both the nearby zone and upstream also disrupts the natural floodplain and increased the speed at which the water flows against the bank, causing unnaturally aggressive erosion.

Jra and its partners have introduced a unique approach to stabilizing the bank with a built -in stone wall, improved slopes of embankment and black willow live. All these pieces are expected to ensure that the railway line does not erode anymore and will also improve the appearance of the bank, while reducing the pollution of nutrients and sludge in the catchment area.

The unnamed tributary is associated with Penns Creek, which flows into the River Suskehana and the Bay of Chesapik. Based on the modeling software, the project will reduce this impact of the sludge load by 59.5 tonnes a year, reduce nitrogen by 1.6 pounds a year and reduce phosphorus by 1.1 pounds a year.

The bank repair project is one of the 12 who receives a growing grant from Greener Plus at Northcentral Pennsylvania. The project has a total estimated project price of $ 453.107; Project partners will contribute to funding to cover what is not paid for by grant.
