SC gas prices are on the rise for now; drops may be in the works across the country – Live 5 News WCSC

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The average price of gas in South Carolina is up again, but experts say it may not be for long after a speech by the newest president.

Gasoline prices in the state rose 2.7 cents a gallon this week for an average price of $2.83 a gallon, according to a GasBuddy survey of more than 3,000 South Carolina gas stations.

Those prices are 11.3 cents a gallon higher than a month ago, but 3.9 cents a gallon lower than a year ago.

The lowest gas price in the state was $2.53 a gallon, very close to the cheapest gas price in the Lowcountry on Monday morning. That price was $2.54 a gallon at the Circle K in North Charleston, located at 8410 Dorchester Road. The most expensive gas was $3.49 a gallon.

“Oil prices have fallen over the past week following President Trump’s speech at the World Economic Forum, where he called on Saudi Arabia to reduce oil prices by restoring production. The drop in oil has stabilized gas prices for now, with crude oil now more than $5 a barrel below the level it was a few weeks ago,” said Patrick De Haan, head of oil analysis at GasBuddy. “As the Feb. 1 deadline approaches for potential U.S. tariffs on Canada and Mexico — key sources of crude oil imports — we will be watching for any potential impact, including the possibility of retaliatory tariffs.” For now, I remain hopeful that the tariffs won’t materialize and that gas prices can remain relatively stable for the next few weeks, at least until the seasonal price hike kicks in in mid-to-late February.

Nationwide, gasoline prices fell less than a cent, 0.9 cents, over the past week for an average price of $3.08 a gallon this week.

The national average was up 6.5 cents a gallon from a month ago, but down 1.8 cents a gallon from a year ago.

Diesel prices continued to rise and were 4.4 cents a gallon higher than a week ago with an average price of $3.65 a gallon.
