In the spring, SBGHC moved inpatient beds from its Durham site to its Walkerton and Kincardine hospitals, saying it needed to stabilize operations amid worsening staff shortages.
These challenges have resulted in reduced emergency department hours at both Durham and Chesley, along with sporadic emergency department closures at other sites. Durham’s ED is open daily from 7am to 5pm, while Chesley’s ED is open Monday to Friday from 7am to 5pm
The hospital corporation surveyed opinions on questions including “What are the most common reasons you visit an SBGHC site (ie, x-rays, lab services, critical emergencies, non-urgent emergency visits, surgical services, etc.) ?”
“What health services do you travel outside of our region for that could potentially be provided closer to home?”

And “Given that we are unable to provide 24/7 emergency services at the Chesley and Durham sites due to limited staff resources, what times are most important to you for accessing care?”
