A resident of North Park, originally by Puerto Rico, was selected as the new poet of the city of San Diego.

Paola Capó-García will take on the role of the city’s third poet of the city for a two-year term from 2025 to 2027.

Capó-García inherits Jason Magbo Perez, who serves from 2022 to 2024. The laureate of the poet of the city is the ambassador of poetry, spoken word and literary arts.

The talent and vision of Paola Capo Garcia illustrates the vital, diverse culture that San Diego makes so special, “said the director of the Cultural Affairs Department Jonathan Glus. “Her work as a poet laureate will unite people through the power of the spoken word, inspiring a deeper appreciation for the communities, cultures and stories that San Diego’s home make.”

During his term, Capó-García will create original, provoking thought and inclusive works designed to engage in San Deigans through poetry, inspire critical thinking and promote deeper community ties. It will also lead a poetic project to improve San Diego’s cultural vitality.

Capó-García is the author of “Clap for Me That’t Me”, which won the Rescue Press’ 2017 Prize for Poetry of the Black Box. Her work is presented in The Volta, The Texas Review, Puerto Rico En Mi Corazón, Latino Book Review, Jubilat, Poetry Society of America, Poets.org and others. Raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, she has lived in San Diego for more than a decade and dwells in a northern park with her partner and dogs.

“I dedicated my life to poetry and education to poetry, so the service of San Diego, the city I love so much as the poet’s laureate is a dream come true,” Coo Garsia said. “As a high school teacher, I saw firsthand how poetry helps young people perceive their identity and attract this great world to a little closer. When we read and write poetry, we cultivate empathy, ambition, critical thinking and cooperation. I look forward to upgrading the work of past poets laureates and celebrate the transformative power of the language. “

Capó-García was selected through a competitive process that began in October 2024. Applicants were evaluated for fiction, literary achievements, educational contributions and community commitment in past poetic projects.

The Poet’s Laureate Selection Committee includes:

· Anthony Black, poet, annual poetry publisher in San Diego and Professor of San Bernardino College.

· Carla Cordero, poet.

· Stephen Hill, Sustainability and Economic Recovery Senior Councilor of Mayor Todd Gloria.

· Robt O’Sullivan, poet.

· Jason Magbo Perez, laureate of poet San Diego (2022-2024).
