The Riverside Terrace neighborhood, located in an unincorporated area of Chino near Highway 71, will get its own right turn lane at the T-intersection of Riverside Terrace and Riverside Drive.
The project was approved at the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors meeting on Oct. 22, with Supervisor Kurt Hagman, who lives in Riverside Terrace, abstaining from voting.
When asked what prompted the project, San Bernardino County Public Information Officer David Worth said it was prompted by community concerns about traffic congestion and the ability to turn safely. The work will include new pavement and concrete pavement, concrete curbs and gutters, curb and slope profiling, road signs and striping.
Asked about the cost of the project, Mr. Werth said the county does not disclose that information until the bidding process is complete. Disclosing it in advance, he said, could affect bids and lead to higher costs.
Asked how much the county has budgeted for the project, Mr. Werth said it doesn’t appear the position is budgeted because the cost won’t be known until bids are received and evaluated and the contract recommended to the board.
However, the staff report indicated that the project would involve $30,000 in costs for unforeseen site conditions and utility conflicts.
Mr. Werth said funding for the project would come from funds in the Senate Public Works Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation bill in the 2024-25 budget, he said. The right-turn lane will separate traffic turning onto Riverside Terrace from traffic heading east on Riverside Drive, the report states. The canvas will also provide a clear indication for turning vehicles entering Riverside Terrace to improve safety for residents and motorists entering and exiting the neighborhood.
