ELIZABETH CITY, NC — Richard Wesley “Rick” Gilbert, beloved husband, father and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Elizabeth City, NC on October 15, 2024, at the age of 71.

Born June 26, 1953 in Fairfield, California, Richard lived a life filled with love, music and service to others.

Richard was a devoted husband to Sandra Swain Gilbert and they shared many happy years together. He was a wonderful and loving father known for his close relationship with his daughter Lucy Gilbert. He also loved his stepchildren, Amanda Hampton and Christian Willadson, treating them like his own.

A longtime resident of the Northern Neck, Richard retired to Elizabeth City where he continued to enrich the lives of those around him. He was a recovery team leader, respected for his dedication and willingness to help anyone in need. Richard’s generous spirit extends beyond his work; he was always ready to lend a hand or offer support to those who needed it.

Music was one of Richard’s great passions. As a talented musician and songwriter, he brings joy to many through his compositions and performances. His love for music was only paralleled by his love for his faithful dog Reba, who was his constant companion.

Richard attends the Forerunner Church where he finds spiritual fellowship and community. His faith was an integral part of his life, guiding him through times of joy and sorrow.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Gilbert and Barbara Wallace.

He leaves behind a loving family including his sister, Ann Kelly; stepsister, Shirley Tipton; stepbrothers Robert Thompson and Rick Thompson; and his stepmother, Shirley Gilbert; and two granddaughters. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In honor of Richard’s life, a celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on November 10. Family and friends can gather to remember the man who touched so many hearts. For more details contact Sandra Gilbert or Lucy Gilbert.

Richard W. Gilbert will be remembered for his boundless generosity, his musical talents, and the warmth he brought to those around him. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy of kindness and love will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
