Following a detailed structural assessment of the roof last year by specialist engineers, a recommendation was made to replace the RAAC panels in the auditorium roof.
The roof assessment was carried out following the change in the previous government’s guidance on the use of RAAC in buildings.
A week’s run of Shrek the musical was canceled in just hours, and a number of tours and shows, including the annual pantomime, have been canceled in the past year.
Cumberland Council aims to complete the roof work by late spring 2025.
Internal improvements will then be completed in the summer, followed by a new full program of events starting in autumn 2025.
Rod Gilbert originally came to Carlisle in the first week of June and tickets for that performance were available for purchase throughout the venue’s closing time.

Following the announcement that the venue will reopen in the autumn, ticket holders have been informed that the date has been changed to October 9, meaning it could be one of the first shows at the venue since September 2023.
GLL have already said they are working to bring “large-scale shows, concerts and events” to the Sands Center from autumn next year.
Leisure provision in the new Sands Center main building is not affected by the auditorium closure.
