Return of ‘full armor of God’: Ron DeSantis to give post-election speech at Notre Dame – Florida Politics

It’s on its way again.

Irish eyes will be smiling on the American governor on Friday, as Gov. Ron DeSantis will deliver remarks at Notre Dame Center for Citizenship and Constitutional Governance.

The speech was scheduled before the election.

“One of our goals at the center is to inspire Notre Dame students to become leading citizens who serve the public good. We do this in part by introducing them to our nation’s current leaders, especially leading Catholic politicians,” said the Center’s director Vincent Phillip Munoz.

“We are privileged to host Governor DeSantis and look forward to learning about his experience in governing one of the largest states in the Union.”

Topics during the conversation could run the gamut from the “war on awakening” that inspired him to make sweeping changes at New College and other Florida institutions of higher learning to the presidential election and Florida’s high-profile amendments legalizing recreational pot and eliminating the state’s restrictions on abortion imposed by the governor and the GOP legislature.

Expect his Catholicism to come through in the remarks, if previous speeches about donning the “full armor of God” to audiences of faith are any indication.

“You’re going to face blowback, you’re going to face attacks, you’re going to face blemishes, and faith in God is what gives you the strength to stand firm against the lies, against the deception, against the opposition. It gives you the foundation to know that all the insults, all the crap they throw at you, ultimately doesn’t matter because you’re aiming higher,” the governor said in 2023.

DeSantis has said he plans to run for president in 2028, and calculations about that will be affected by how the election plays out in the coming days.

A Donald Trump losing marginalizes the opponent JD Vance and creates a window for the governorship that a Trump/Vance victory will likely close.
