Residents of Mt. Baldy near Bridge Fire Burn Scar, ready for a storm, even digging a trench to deflect possible debris – ABC7 Los Angeles

Mt. Baldi, California (Kabc) – This is not only the highest fire areas. Residents living in the Fire Burning Zone on the bridge in San Bernardino County are preparing for heavy rain.

This is a time race – and the rain – for the resident of Mt. Baldy Andrew Curran, which is preparing for forecast for heavy rains for Thursday.

“So, we just dig a trench for our friend Carmen here. She just didn’t have enough space for the water stream. So we just give her a little space and then the plan is to come back and add a pipeline for a plumbing,” Kuran said.

In previous years, this level of urgency was not necessary. But five months ago, the bridge fire devastated the community, leaving the surrounding hills barren.

Now the threat of mud plates over the mountain village.

“We are preparing with K-Rils and everything like all the things we have to deal with in the last few months show how tight this community is,” says James Taier, a resident of the area.

Despite the preparation, Taier and his son Logan plan to evacuate before the storm strikes. Others, such as Tracy Boyd, are packed and ready to leave, but it remains in the city to take care of a customer.

“We have an evacuation plan for our client just in case, because we are just trying to be prepared and think forward,” Boyd said.

The bets could not be higher. Heavy rain on unstable scars from burning can cause life -threatening lightning floods and violent flows of debris. Whole roads can be buried within seconds. The fire crews of San Bernardino County will be alert, ready to issue evacuation orders at the time of notice.

“We have seen how quickly the fire can affect the community. The muddy fabrics happen even faster with an even less warning. Once the hill moves, it may be too late to get out,” said Eric Sherwin with the County Fire Service San Bernardino.

Residents remain on the alert in this community, which has already experienced devastating fires, they take care of the next storm.

“So grateful that the county provides a TEMS Unit warning system and then the monitoring application only all the knowledge that is available to us to have access to us,” said the Mt. Baldy Ashley Murray.
