Reno – After months of discussion and speculation, special elections for Renault citizens will be held to decide whether the city will be defined.
On Monday evening, February 10, the Renault Municipal Council took vote, unanimously approved an ordinance calling for special elections to be held on May 3, 2025 to allow the vote for or against the proposal to remove corporate existence of the city of Renault.
This comes after a petition has been distributed throughout the city for months, looking for registered voters interested in putting a voting decoration. The last petition had more than 400 verified voters, a number required by law to provoke special elections; The petition was submitted to the city, as well as in the Parker County Election Office on December 18, 2024.
Before the council calls for the special elections, the former member of the Council of Renault Joy Jenkins spoke to the Council, saying that the Council should have called for the special election more recently.
“At the meeting on January 27, the Council ordered and voted to put the subject (the ordinance calling for the vote in May),” Jenkins said. Jenkins cites the Local Government Texas Code Chapter 62.002, which states: “The mayor of the municipality orders elections on the issue of removing the corporate existence of the municipality if a petition is requested to the mayor and is signed by at least 400 Qualified voters of the municipality. “
Mayor Hector Bas -Jr. answered Jenkins’ comment that the Council has until February 14 to order special elections. Citizens will have the opportunity to vote on this urgent issue in the special elections; They will also vote for or against the proposal to reduce the tax rate in the city of Renault for the current year of $ 0.556319 (accepted tax rate) to $ 0.34011 (voter approval percentage), a question that the Council also approve To be included in the inclusion in the voter included), a question that the Council also approved to be included in the special elections.
