Elmer Rueda-Linares, 18, was sentenced to four to 10 years in prison for his role in a fatal crash in April. The crash resulted in the death of Kurt Englehart, who was a senior adviser to Senator Catherine Cortez Masto.
Rueda-Linares admitted he was intoxicated at the time of the incident and expressed remorse before Judge Kathleen Sigurdson handed down the sentence in a Washoe County courtroom Monday afternoon.
Video evidence reviewed during the sentencing showed that Rueda-Linares had a green light to turn left, which is why he was not charged with felony DUI. However, the prosecutor noted that if Rueda-Linares had remained at the scene and acted appropriately, he would have faced felony charges.
Judge Sigurdson acknowledged that he understood why Rueda-Linares left the scene, but stressed that leaving the scene of an accident was inexcusable.
The crash happened on April 6 at 4:27 a.m. at the intersection of Kietzke Lane and Peckham Lane. The occupants of the second vehicle, including Rueda-Linares, fled on foot but were later apprehended by police. Authorities confirmed that impairment was a factor in the crash.
