Reno High Alum Kailiana Ramos is one of nine female players at the University of Western Oregon in Oregon, who are suing the school and looking for damage of $ 28.2 million.
The trial was brought to the Federal Court and claims chief coach Jessica Sentros and Assistant Demetrius Marlowe physically abused players through excessive and unreasonable amounts of exercise as punishment; emotionally abused and humiliated plaintiffs through neglectful comments about their bodies; and punished them for suffering injuries. These suspected violations of the NCAA guidelines came in the 2023-24 season, when Ramos was the first year junior in the team after transferring from Cal Poly Humboldt. She also played at Mendocino College.
West Oregon is a school in Division II in Montmouth, Ore., 20 miles west of Salem, State Capitol. The team went 10-13 and 3-15 to the conference last season with a vote of the player held in February to take their last six games. Sentros and Marlow remain the coaches of West Oregon this season. Peatross is in her second year with the program with the alleged violations that occur in her first season in the campus.
After last year’s vote to cancel the rest of the season, both coaches were put on administrative leave but were restored after the University hired a law firm in March to investigate the allegations and found them unfounded.
The lawsuit describes that as a “false investigation, intended solely to conceal more abuse”, with only four of the 12 players interviewed who submitted complaints in the athletic department. He also claims that the investigator did not request videos, emails, documents or other records from the plaintiffs who would approve their claims.
The lawsuit calls both the coaches and the school, the president of the university, the Dean of Students and the Athletic Director. The plaintiffs held a press conference on Wednesday in Portland to turn to the allegations.
“Running we had to do was not for speed, speed or strength,” said Western Oregon player Anna McClav for public broadcasting in Oregon. “It was for harm and see how they could break us. They called me dog shit. They called other terrible names. “
Players say the coaching staff rejected 10 of the 12 players in the team after complaining about their treatment, which ended their athletic scholarships. Ramos is not on the list of this season, although another resident of Renault, a graduate of Bishop Manog, Milasaray Tau, is a freshman in the team.
The players said they were forced to go through long practices seven days in a row, even when they were injured or sick. They claim that coaches took the players’ belongings at night before the road game
“The coaches would confiscate the players’ phones and threaten to wake them up at 3am and force them to run at night until the sun comes out if the plaintiffs were caught with a phone,” the lawsuit said. “The players were forced to flee while they were not physically ill, their feet were bloody, vomiting, suffering from dehydration, extremely exhaustion and even unwanted weight loss.”
McClav said during the press conference this week that the solid style of the coaches had crossed the line.
“There was a constant harassment from these coaches,” McClav said, according to the athletic. “We are all athletes in college and we know a heavy coaching and what it takes to be an athlete. But it was downplaying, harassment, just a straight abuse that no one should endure. We all knew it was not good, we all took a position and risk our scholarships and our time in Western Oregon to face abusers. “
The lawsuit calls for the dismissal of PEATROSS and MARLOW and the players to be restored to the team if they are still enrolled in the school. He also wants university training to prevent abuse, harassment and revenge, as well as an independent monitor for a minimum of two years to ensure player safety. He also calls for consultations for current and former players.
“From that, I just want people to know what they did us,” McClav said.
The university released a statement in response to the lawsuit, which reads: “Western is committed to maintaining its values and to encourage an environment that encourages the success of students, well -being and a sense of belonging to all.”
The public broadcast in Oregon reported that last year’s emissions appeared in February, when a player accidentally came across Peatross, causing a confrontation between the player and the coach, resulting in the public safety staff intervened. Sentros filed a police protocol against the player, saying it was the elbow in the chest deliberately.
“After a police officer in Montmouth, he finally managed to review the staff, he discovered that PEATROSS reports to the law enforcement authorities were unfounded,” the lawsuit said.
Portland lawyer Jason Cafuri and Civil Rights and Discrimination Lawyer Cheenoa Payne are players who include Ramos, Gracei Arnold, Greta Baker, Kilin Dockins, Han Hopkins, Anna McClav, Jodi Noyce and Pa’o Tweet. Players ally Harman and Kya Canho have already arranged claims against the school, Kafuri said.
West Oregon is 7-11 this season and plans to play the University of West Washington on Saturday.
