We live at an exceptional moment of northern Nevada, in which the future of our children depends on bold action – the main time in which we need to focus our full energy on improving the results at all levels of education. To achieve this, our fast-growing region needs the best possible study environments and experience for all students. As leaders of our local education system, this is the reason to express our strong support for the proposed reconstruction at the Grand Sierra resort.
Support for the GSR reconstruction plan is an investment in our future. The project, carried out through a public-private partnership between the GSR and the Reno Reversal Agency, will meet the critical needs in this community, will give the University a modern place, which will lead to significant new revenue for Wolf Pack athletics and will provide significant tax. The community, as a lower class sizes, so that it can achieve municipal degrees, such as lower classes class, ultimately a lower level of size to reach cities, such as lower class, so that they can reach municipalities so lower persons for lower sizes so that lower persons, such as lower class sizes, can achieve municipal grades. This project is a victory for the community, the University of Nevada, the WCSD – and the most important thing – our students.
According to this proposal, the city of Renault will not be responsible for the payments of the bonds related to the project, so there is no financial risk to the city or its inhabitants. In addition, this project does not use money from a university. The project will generate a significant amount of revenue from property tax and sales for local authorities and WCSD.
It is important to note that GSR will only reduce the part of the new property tax revenue generated on its parcel required to complete the project. Nothing is stopped by the normal funding streams that go to public education. The tax forecasts drawn up by the Economic Analysis Company, hired by the city of Renault, amount to over $ 100 million new property tax revenue over the next 30 years and over $ 120 million new collections of sales taxes through local school tax and WC-1, which is the way WCSD builds new and improves all schools. This is more than $ 220 million new tax revenue from the GSR project alone, which will go to support our teachers and students and guarantee that our K-12 educational infrastructure meets the needs of our children. In addition, given that we need to support our growing workforce, the project will include the creation and construction of approximately 300 residential units at affordable prices.
The project will also raise the university’s athletic department and will expand its impact on our community. With the new arena, which is the central part of the GSR reconstruction plan, Wolf Pack athletics will become one of the main drivers of the North Nevada sports tourism industry. The GSR project promises to improve the university’s annual economic impact of $ 2.2 billion on the region and will increase the quality of life and the future of our community.
This project has already gone through significant public review and independent analysis. It is clear that the benefits will be huge without financial risk to the community. The time is crucial as the construction schedules must be completed in order for the arena to break and be completed in time for the 2027-28 basketball season in Nevada.
This is a project that everyone in our community can support. It is beneficial for our students in Washow County and the University of Nevada. We urge you to express your support for this opportunity for generations. This is Renault’s next major move.
