Plains repeated as boys team champion at Monday’s Region I-2A meet at Mae Simmons Park in dominant fashion. Behind the top three finishers in Sawyer Hamilton, Jeremiah Gonzalez and Christian Sanchez, the Cowboys totaled 37 points. Eldorado and Sonora are second with 133.

Plains will return to Round Rock to try for a third straight Class 2A title on Nov. 1.

Six others will join the Cowboys at the UIL state meet, including three from Smyer. The Bobcats placed Mika Zapata (fourth), Ismael Pisano (seventh) and Austin Martinez (eighth) to finish seventh as a team. Hale Center’s Carter Gonzalez (13th), New Deal’s Grayson Broadus (14th) and Abernathy’s Noah Rigler (16th) also advanced to state as individuals.

Farwell senior Bella Jaime ran the 2-mile in 12 minutes, 7.6 seconds to win the girls regional title. Teammate Lexi Wade placed second in 12:18.60.

The duo led the Lady Blue to a second-place finish in the team standings and a berth to the state meet. Gruver (76) edged Farwell by three points for the regional title.

The only other state qualifier on Monday was Levelland’s Saul Hernandez. Hernandez placed 19th in the 4A boys race with a time of 16:53.40.

The remaining three divisions – 1A, 3A and 5A – will compete Tuesday at Mae Simmons Park.
