Earlier this year news broke that Danny Boyle and Alex Garland were returning to the zombie scene with 28 years latersequel to the beloved post-apocalyptic series last seen in 2007. This is actually the first of at least three films and will feature big stars like Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes, along with a returning Cillian Murphy.
We haven’t heard much about the film since then, but Fiennes recently provided some details about what it will be. While promoting his new film conclave, the actor told IndieWire that the film takes place 28 years after the return of the rabies virus, which plunged Britain into zombified chaos. According to him, the idea of the film is about “a young boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother”. Instead of going out alone, the unnamed boy takes his mother “through this beautiful northern English countryside” where they eventually meet a doctor who is “a force for good”.
All so far 28 years later the famous cast consists of adult actors, with no real mention of their role in the true story. (It’s not even clear what’s in store for Murphy’s bike courier Jim.) Speaking about the upcoming larger trilogy, Fiennes revealed that two of the three films have been fully shot — last we heard, the second film is subtitled The bone temple and will be governed by The Marvels’ Nia DaCosta. If we’ll see more of the (supposedly) good doctor in part two, Fiennes isn’t saying; we only know Murphy in both as he was spotted filming scenes for a temple in September.
What else to expect 28 years later, and how it continues 28 days saga, we’ll have to wait to find out before its release on June 20, 2025.
