Rachel’s owner speaks after Monday morning burglaries in south Lubbock – Fox 34

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – “(I) can’t really figure out what they were doing or who they were, but they were just going all over the place, basically all over the 80 precinct and Indiana, basically breaking into businesses.”

These are the words of Rachael Delgado, owner of Rachael’s Restaurant. In 2019, it was known as Smokin’ Joe’s, selling snow cones and food at concession stands.

She quickly realized that things had to change.

“It didn’t work out here,” Delgado said. “I think they wanted a breakfast place, it used to be a breakfast place. So we gave the people what they wanted and they loved it.”

In 2020, the restaurant was officially born and has been serving the Lubbock community for almost five years.

Early Monday morning, however, things turned upside down for her business and many others in the area.

“It was about 3:50 in the morning,” Delgado said. “They tried to get in through the back door and then they went in through the side door. They just smashed it with a crowbar. “It was two young guys, all I saw was a guy with glasses, they were wearing a mask and glasses.”

Rachel says she saw damage in multiple areas of her restaurant.

“They kicked our door down,” Delgado said. “Unfortunately they did get into our safe and our office. The amount of damage is several thousand dollars.

Rachel posted about the break-in on social media, drawing support from all over Lubbock.

She says despite the setback, she knows the city is here to support her and other small businesses.

“Lubbock was great supporting us today, but even before that it was a little slow,” Delgado said. “It’s slow everywhere right now, so it’s just been a little tough. Then for someone to come along and do that to us is just sad, honestly. But I know it will be okay. I know Lubbock takes care of us.

Lubbock police say they are tracking the thieves as at least six businesses try to make up for what they took.
