The Virginia State University (VSU) is the latest HBCU, which has officially joined the elite ranks of institutions set by R2, a distinction held by only 139 universities across the country and less than 15 HBCU. This prestigious designation, awarded by the classification of Carnegie to higher education institutions, recognizes universities with high research and significant production of doctoral degrees. With this achievement, the Virginia State University strengthens its position as a leader in research, innovation and HBCU education.

“This is an important stage for the Virginia State University,” says Dr. Omar Flaison, a deputy research and economic development protest. “Achieving R2 status signals federal agencies, industrial partners and future students that VSU is a leader in innovation, findings and advanced scholarships.”

The achievement of R2 status emphasizes the permanent investments of VSU in research infrastructure, excellent achievements and external funding for grants.
