The Las Vegas Raiders made a much-needed move this week, signing quarterback Desmond Reeder to the practice squad.
The team needed to add depth to the position as it placed quarterback Aidkan O’Connell on injured reserve after he broke his thumb in Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
There’s also a chance, if necessary, that Ridder could be called upon to start at some point, as quarterback Gardner Minshew II has struggled mightily this season, especially in Las Vegas’ last outing when he committed four turnovers.
In this case, Ridder could serve as a reliable option, as the Raiders offense seems to complement his style of play.
“I feel like they do a great job of being able to move the pocket,” Reeder told our Hondo S. Carpenter Sr. “They’re doing a little bit of RPO and things like that and just seeing that basic offense and what it’s like. to be able to either release and just play a return game or be able to move the pocket with different guards and different things like that.”
Reeder, who hasn’t played a single snap this season, has played in similar offensive systems before, which should help him adjust pretty quickly.
“I mean … every quarterback is different, so it might take a little longer than others. It also depends on whether the game is similar or not. Fortunately for me, in the last three offenses I’ve been involved in, they Sure, different terminology, different words, but it’s just figuring out the new terminology, the new words, the little nuances of every detail, practice, come with time, and it should take two weeks.”
Reeder was previously on the Arizona Cardinals practice squad after being traded to Arizona this offseason.
He made 13 starts for the Atlanta Falcons last year. The Falcons selected him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
If Minshew’s woes continue, we could very well see Ridder take his place as QB1. He has experience as a starter, and although he hasn’t played in a regular season game since last season, fresh legs can come in handy at times.
