Push to Merge SC Health Agents revived after dropping out in 2024 – WIS NEWS 10

Columbia, SC (WIS) – Data shows that South Carolina spends more money from other states to enhance human health, but it does not pay off: Southern Carolini are among the most unhealthy Americans.

Legislators believe they have a plan to deal with it.

Last year, a bill to unite six state health agencies collapsed in the last moments of the legislative session, only to reach the governor’s desk, after a procedural maneuver by members of the ultra -conservative freedom cause.

Now the legislators revive this proposal in 2025, but with some key changes.

“Our communities have an increasing number of homeless people, many of whom have untreated mental, physical or drug problems. They fall through the cracks of a system that does not coordinate, communicate or cooperate. We have to correct this, “Governor Henry McMaster told members of the General Assembly on Wednesday night, during his annual state address.

On the day after McMaster made this request for the refused health care system in South Carolina – established that it was the most destroyed of any country in the country – the senators held their first hearing of the year on a bill to deal with this issue.

Unlike last year’s version, which would bring together six state agencies into one, this new bill will combine three agencies – the existing mental health department, a disability and special needs department and the alcohol department and other drug abuse services – and services for drug abuse – and services Drug abuse – and create a new “Department of Behavioral Health and Development Disability”.

“People with mental health problems, problems with addiction and disorder disorder, they overlap and in many cases are closed by one agency to another and the result is that they do not receive the care that deserves in a timely manner,” Senator Tom Tom Davis, R – Borfort and sponsor of the bill, said during the hearing on Thursday at the Senate Medical Affairs Subcommittee. “We fail this specific population.”

The leaders of two of these existing agencies, mental health and disabilities and special needs are responsible to the unexplored advice.

However, supporters believe that the merger of the departments into a new cabinet agency, responsible and able to be fired by the governor, will make them more responsive to the needs of the southern Carolini.

“If you want to have accountability and do not want to have bureaucratic control and do not want to have a mission crawl, put them under the authority of the CEO responsible for this executive branch,” Davis said.

Last year’s bill prevails in the Senate, and in the House of Representatives.

But he was met with criticism by some legislators, especially members of a cause of freedom, who claim to create a position similar to the “king of health”.

These criticisms have not disappeared, brought up by a speaker during a public hearing on Thursday.

But supporters of the legislation counteract this claim is not true.

“I think many of you have much more confidence in our machybel’s ability to make conspiracy than we, because if you have not noticed, the government is not as good at creating a conspiracy as you think it is,” Saint is. Josh Kimbrell, R – Spartanburg, he said.

Hearing the bill on Thursday was his first, so the legislation is still a few steps away from reaching the governor.
