Public Safety Leaders in Birmingham and Jefferson show support for banning Glock – WBRC state switches

Birmingham, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham and the leaders of the Jefferson County Law enforcement and lawmakers agreed on Monday to support the Glock Switches Prohibition Law or State -Level Weapons Transformation devices.

Mayor Randal Udfin and several local partners, including the sheriff of Jefferson Mark Pettway, District Prosecutor Daniel Carr and temporarily acting Michael Pickett.

Birmingham officers and Jefferson MPs say they saw first -hand the devastation that these conversion devices have caused.

While the federal government has banned them, state legislation aims to give local law enforcement agencies more instruments to bring out the devices from the street.

On Monday, a single front was shown in support of this ban on the state.

These conversion devices make semi -automatic weapons shoot as machine guns.

Employees claim that state legislation would mean obtaining Glock switches and these devices outside the hands of criminals, holding them responsible in the State and Federal Courts.

Governor Kay Ivy also supports the prohibition of the state as part of a wider package of public safety bills, legislators say the law will send a message.

“We inform them that we will be difficult for a crime and want to have a city and a county that is safe, habitable where people can work and play so as to send a message that here we are legislators, we are legislators , we as city officials, we as law enforcement will not support this here in Jefferson County, “said Senator Merika Coleman.

Nearly two dozen other conditions have already banned such conversion devices.

Reporter Philip Ensler again filed legislation that would make the possession of the devices a crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

City leaders say they hope this bill will be passed.

While police in Birmingham sees an influx of Glock switches, temporary boss Michael Pickett says they have removed dozens of the streets in the last few months.

While dealing with the need for a nationwide ban on weapons conversion devices, Birmingham police have announced a new overall crime reduction strategy aimed at dealing with violence throughout the city.

This multifaceted strategy covers seven critical components designed to significantly reduce crime and increase public safety.

These strategies combine improved direct application investigative techniques to disturb violence throughout the city.

1. Specialized implementation teams: Deploying the Special Executive Authorities (SET) and the Tactical Division Department (the most elite tactical unit of BPD) will focus on the most dangerous criminals based on multiple sources, including BPD Intel, Commander Commander and Shots of Potter Potter Glass data.
2. Rapid detention of abusers: Continuing the proactive efforts by the crime reduction team to retain persons with exceptional orders of violence.
3. Enhanced federal partnerships: led by Deputy Chief Giakori Foster, this initiative will continue to work closely with our federal partners and the US law firm to provide more federal charges, with constant support from Jefferson County Sheriff.
4. Special Group for Stolen Vehicles: In order to fight the use of stolen vehicles in crime, we have developed a joint initiative with the Jefferson County Sheriff to deal with crimes related to stolen vehicles.
5. Repression of illegal firearms: Cooperation with ATF to deal with illegal weapons trafficking and straw purchases.
6. Increased presence of the command: Introducing utility captains during peak criminal hours to improve leadership and reaction during our most common times.
7. Proactive Release Team: Formation of a team dedicated to the capture of potential shooters before violent action occurs.
