Las Vegas, Nev. (FOX5)-The subway policy said the argument for the withdrawal of an electronic device could be the reason for a 15-year-old boy to shoot and kill his father.
The shooting happened just a few days after Christmas near Rainbow and Lake Mead. Fox5 wanted to know how a common form of discipline could turn into violence.
Technology and electronics are everywhere and has always been part of the life of Kimbel McGi’s twins.
“Our thing is trying to make it manageable and make them understand that there are limits and there are good ways to use the time on the screen,” McGi explained.
“There is no denial,” the child psychiatrist D -R Sid Hurana agreed. “School work, homework, connection with friends, many things happen through screens.”
These same electronics are what the police claim has brought a teenager behind bars, facing a life sentence if he tried as an adult. His next court date is at the end of February.
Without speaking specifically about this case, Dr. Hurana explained that more and more children have become dependent on electronic devices. Screen dependence appears in his practice every day.
“Our teenagers are becoming more and more freight and the removal of it literally takes alcohol or the essence of your choice,” said Dr. Hurana.
A 2022 study, called preventive interventions for internet addiction in young children, found that nearly 14 percent of children were addicted to the Internet. A more early study of the media reason found that one -third of parents and teenagers said they were arguing every day about using devices. From time to time, this causes arguments between McGi and her children.
“We want them to be a large part of all the decisions we make,” McGie added. “This is not an edict of us. We put a lot of intrigue and the intrigue, as if they were 2 years old. “
According to the Mayo clinic, screens can make the brain reward center release the hormone of the sensation, Dopamine, which can keep children return to their screens. The more time the children return to their screens, the more dopamine is released. Dr. Hurana said that the screening to the screen is quite new, becoming a problem only in the last decade. Parents are now not prepared for this because the generations have not learned them before.
“This has become a huge problem and is a problem that our generation has not been prepared for,” added Dr. Hurana.
Now, Hurana admitted that most children are not forced to kill their parents on an electronic device. Family dynamics, upbringing, mood and anger problems on undiagnosed psychiatric disorders such as ADHD can help bring a child to dangerous behavior.
“Sometimes it is precisely the creation of this perfect or imperfect storm that leads to these extreme acts of violence and aggression.”
A study by the media reason found that one in two teenagers said they were addicted to their electronic devices. McGie noticed a change in his relationship with teenagers with the screens after the pandemic.
“It’s great, but to get them out of the house and the time on the screen is much more difficult than it used to be.”
Dr. Hurana began to see addiction to the screen in her practice about 10 years ago. It became much worse after Covid-19 forced us to move work and school online.
“This need has become evil and has become the form of addiction,” said Dr. Hurana.
This comes with serious consequences. A 2022 study, called an increased screen time as a reason to reduce physical, psychological health and sleep models, found that constant exposure to devices such as smartphones, computers and television could increase stress and anxiety in children. A different study published in preventive medicine reports found that children who spent more time in front of the screen show less curiosity, self-control and emotional stability. In addition, they are more likely to be diagnosed with anxiety or depression than children who have less time on the screen.
“We still can’t get rid of this,” added Dr. Hurana. “We need to learn to live with him, which makes him even more difficult.”
Dr. Hurana pointed out that some signs of screen addiction can seek in their children.
“They want to miss other activities because they want to be on their screen,” continued Dr. Hurana. “They lie about it. They minimize the use of their screen. They try to tour the parental rules and penetrate these filters and barriers to gain access to it. “
If these signs seem familiar, he said there are ways to help children get rid of screen addiction. It starts with conversation and rules, just like what McGie did with his children.
“Go out with a plan and let everyone go home. Guide with an example and have clear expectations what is allowed and what is wrong, “explained Dr. Hurana.
When these rules are violated, do not take away devices as a punishment. Instead, Hurana recommends that it takes away the device’s capabilities by turning off the Internet or excluding parental controls.
“Our experience takes the device seems to be a violation of teenagers. This serves as a trigger, which is illegally much more aggressive than excluding permits, “continued Dr. Hurana.
If aggressively responds to the child, Dr. Hurana recommends consultations, just like what McGi did with his children.
“They explore more than their anxiety when they are away from the screen, away from the computer,” McGi said. “The therapist and I talk about it often. The screen is here to stay, but it must be managed. “
Dr. Hurana does not believe that money should be an obstacle to the help of mental health. He said Nevada’s mental health offers low cost opportunities.
