Pressure on Postecoglou mounts after Tottenham lose at home to struggling Leicester – WKMG News 6 & ClickOrlando

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou admitted there is uncertainty over his future after his under-performing side were beaten for a fourth consecutive Premier League game – by an opponent who had previously lost their last seven games in a row in the competition.

After losing 1-2 at Leicester on Sunday, Tottenham – a club from English football’s so-called ‘Big Six’ – bid to join the breakaway Super League of Europe’s top clubs in 2021. – languished in 15th place in the 20-team league. Tottenham’s seven-game winless run in the league is their worst since 2008. this way.

Postecoglou said Tottenham’s current situation is “as low as we’ve been” this season and is counting on the imminent return of a number of key players – notably centre-backs Christian Romero and Micky van de Ven – to help turn the team’s fortunes around.

Asked if he thought he should be given that time, the Australian coach said: “Who knows mate? I think there is a fair share that will say no.

“When you’re a manager of a football club, you can be very vulnerable and isolated. I don’t feel it. I really feel that this group of players give everything for the club and I have a group of staff who are really dedicated. I can focus on that.

Postecoglou may still be in the job just because of his record in other competitions this season, with Spurs in the League Cup semi-finals – and leading Liverpool 1-0 after the first leg – and in the automatic League qualification places Europe.

“There’s still a fantastic opportunity to make an impact this season,” he said.

However, Tottenham’s league campaign has unraveled spectacularly, with just eight points separating the team from the relegation zone.

Leicester came from behind at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, scoring both of their goals early in the second half through Jamie Vardy in the 46th and Bilal El Hanous in the 50th. Richarlison put Tottenham ahead in the 33rd.

“From my point of view, I see a group of players who give as much as they can. I know he will turn around,” said Postecoglou, who has been in charge of Tottenham since June 2023.

Tottenham have been plagued by injuries this season, particularly in defence, and played three days after beating Hoffenheim in the Europa League.

“They should have backed him up today but there were probably at least two or three players who weren’t 100 per cent,” said Postecoglou, who later name-checked Richarlison and Pape Sarr. James Madison retired late due to illness.

Tottenham were jeered at the end of the game and Postecoglou was jeered by some fans as he walked down the tunnel after the game. Footage on social media showed him walking back in an attempt to confront the supporters.

“Certainly something I wanted to do when I took over the role was to try and bring the club together and create an environment here where we’re all focused on one thing,” Postecoglou said. “Obviously it didn’t work out that way.”

Leicester climbed out of the relegation zone with just their second win in 10 league games under Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was himself under scrutiny ahead of the game having only been hired at the end of November.

Another penalty for Mbeumo

Brentford beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in a clash of mid-table clubs that reversed after a penalty shoot-out.

Brian Mbeumo’s first spot-kick attempt of the second half hit the bar and was cleared by Palace defender Mark Gwehi, who was booked for fouling on video review. Mbeumo made no mistake on his second attempt.

Kevin Schade made it 2-0 for the visitors before Romain Esse pulled a goal back on his Palace debut two minutes after coming on as a substitute.

Aston Villa couldn’t build on Jacob Ramsey’s eighth-minute strike to draw 1-1 at West Ham, for whom Emerson equalized in the 70th and Lucas Paqueta substituted for what would have been the eventual winner.

Later, Manchester United visit Fulham.
