Police respond to shooting near Legion Field; suspect in custody – Alabama news anchor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) – Police in Birmingham are investigating a shooting that happened Friday afternoon near Legion Field.

According to the Birmingham Police Department, police responded to reports of a person shot on the 200 block of 8th Avenue W at 2:19 p.m.

When the police arrived at the scene, they found a man who had been shot. He was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries are not life-threatening.

Investigators say they believe the victim got into a fight with the person who shot him, prompting the suspect to pull out a gun and shoot the victim. The unidentified person has been detained.

This shooting comes as thousands of people are at Legion Field for this weekend’s Magic City Classic. The game, which dates back to 1940, is the nation’s largest all-time black college and university football game. Played annually at Legion Field, Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University will square off on Saturday.
