Santa Fe, NM – Pelican recovers at the New Mexico Wildlife Center after police and animal services Santa Fe saved the wounded bird last week.

Pekos Pete Pelican, as they call him, is probably far from home. The New Mexico Wildlife Center did not hesitate to take it after it was found to hide behind a bush, wounded and in a very bad shape.

“This pelican came in a very dehydrated, rather overweight weight. He was obviously not close to food for some time, “says Laura Seagel, a communications specialist at New Mexico Wildlife Center.

Seagel said they were accepting injured, orphan and sick animals and taking care of them. Once the animals improve, they put them back into the wild.

Pecos Pete is doing a lot better – but how did you get here?

“He probably landed somewhere, like a wet section of a road that looked like water for him or a small water body, where there was not enough space for him to fly again. In the end, he was dehydrated again, hypothermic and failed to come back again, “Seagel said.

Siegel says, although it is not common to see pelicans in New Mexico, they are not unknown to the desert.

“They migrate here. We are right in the middle of a migrating flying, so we get all kinds of interesting birds through our area. Sometimes we see them in our hospital, “she said.

Pecos Pete is doing well, but it was a little extravaganza.

“We were all bitten by this Pelican,” Seagel said. “He is enchant, is what I am trying to overcome. He is alert, doing really well and stabilizes. “

They expect to release him soon.
