Officers were injured, the marches were arrested in Immigration Protest in San Bernardino – San Bernardino County Sun

What began as a peaceful protest in San Bernardino against the promise of President Donald Trump for mass deportations of undocumented immigrants has become a violent reflection between police and marches on Monday, February 3rd.

At least five officers were injured and about the same number of protesters were arrested when officers formed a line to prevent the marches from going to the 215 highway, police in San Bernardino said.

SGT. Christopher Gray, a spokesman for the police station, said on Tuesday that he did not know the conditions of the injured officers. He said several police vehicles were vandalized, but Gray said he didn’t know how badly they were damaged.

The protest began around 10am on the base street and Avenue on Vernon Peak.

“By approximately 8:45 pm, a crowd of nearly 300 people began to march in the middle of the base street to the 215 highway with the expressed intention to block the traffic on the highways,” police said. “Due to the immediate safety concerns for both pedestrians and motorists, the officers created a scheme of a fight at the intersection of the base street and Peris Street to prevent the crowd from accessing the highway.”

Then some protesters threw rocks, bottles and fireworks, police said. Police ordered the crowd to scatter, but many protesters refused to leave.

San Bernardino police called officers from other agencies and the crowd began to leave after officers fired tear gas and less deadly circles.

Police avoid a similar situation in Los Angeles, where protesters blocked 101 highways on Sunday.

The arrested on Monday were booked on suspicion of crime, including an attack with a deadly weapon and a peace officer battery.
