After the dry start of 2025, Carson City is expected to see his first snowfall of the year this weekend.

The Rino National Meteorological Service forecast over 3 inches in the settlements of the valleys, with the peaks of the ridge expected to receive 6-8 inches. The snow is expected to start on Saturday morning and continue until Sunday morning.

“The storm will bring really cold air,” said Tyler Salas, a meteorologist at NWS, Friday.

Salas said the storm was coming from the north, which explains why temperatures became low on Friday.

While the weather has been dry since the beginning of the year, residents will probably see differently this weekend. Salas said these models are due to a blocking model and high pressure in the west.

“Everything that reaches our area rises and surrounds and falls from the north, so they don’t really have much moisture with them,” Salas said. “So far, we are still waiting for a good atmospheric river storm or at least some storm that has a better source of moisture.”

Looking at the extended forecast, Salas does not expect an atmospheric river until February. While January was soft and dry, the expected storm could change that.

“In January, we usually see 0.94 inches of rainfall or 2 inches of snow,” Salas said.

The accumulated snow can make it difficult to travel through the mountain passes during the storm. Salas said the higher mountain peaks can get up to 8 inches.

Salas recommends that passengers consult Caltrans and NDOT to be upset with road conditions and chain control.

“They usually have good information,” Salas said.
