Northwestern loses defensive battle to Morningside – Dakota News Now

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (Dakota News Now) – A late defensive stand by Morningside ended Northwestern’s chances for a road win as the Raiders fell 13-7 in Sioux City.

In what was a defensive stalemate in the first quarter, Morningside made the play in field position, forcing three straight three-and-outs before converting on a 38-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 1:31 left in the first.

A 37-yard deep ball put the Raiders up by two early in the second as Morningside went up 10-0 with 14:03 left in the half.

On the ensuing defensive drive, Gavin Lorenzen helped Northwestern get a solid field goal with a Mustang 35 interception, his first of the season and third of his career. The field goal unit then came up with a chance to get on the board, but Stader’s 52-yard attempt was wide left. The Raiders stopped another punt with an interception when Clayton Bosma picked off his second pass of the year near the goal line, helping the Raiders to halftime.

Northwestern started the second half creating multiple turnovers, first forcing a fumble on the opening kickoff to get close to the red zone. On the Mustangs’ first drive of the half, Korver Demma recorded a strip sack and Trystin Voss recovered a fumble to set up another Red Raider punt. The Raiders took advantage, getting into plus territory again before Hayden Gross found Peyton Carroll on a fadeaway to put his team on the board.

Morningside later converted on a 44-yard field goal to make it 13-7 heading into the final quarter.

The Raiders made one final push with less than two minutes left, but Morningside’s defense helped the Mustangs come away with a 13-7 win.
