No. 9 Volleyball loses third straight five-set match – University of Texas Athletics

AUSTIN, Texas – No. 9 Texas Volleyball lost its third straight five-set match, falling to Oklahoma on Sunday at Gregory Gymnasium.

The Longhorns (12-6, 7-3) had a season-high nine aces but were held to a .187 hitting percentage in the game.

Madison Skinner led with 17 kills and recorded her second straight double-double with 11 digs. Reagan Rutherford finished with 15 kills while hitting .344 in the match.

The Longhorns got off to a fast start in the first set and jumped out to an 8-4 lead before the Sooners took over. Oklahoma used an 8-2 run to grab the lead and then went on to win 25-21.

Texas trailed early in the second set, but the Longhorns were able to use a 10-3 run to grab a big lead. The Sooners were able to chip away at the lead and force extra points before Texas won 27-25. Rutherford led the way offensively with six kills in the second set.

The Longhorns jumped out to another big lead in the third set and held on for a 25-19 win. Keonileus Akana finished the set with back-to-back aces to put Texas back ahead in the match.

Texas took a 15-13 lead into the fourth set before Oklahoma rallied on a 7-1 run to grab a 20-16 lead. The Sooners won the set 25-17 and forced the Longhorns’ third straight five-set match.

The fifth set was all Oklahoma as the Sooners jumped out to a big lead and never looked back for a 15-9 victory.

Texas returns to the road next week to face Mississippi State on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
