Winston-Salem, North Carolina – 12th-ranked NC State men’s soccer (8-3-5, 3-2-2 ACC) drops its final regular-season game on the road at Wake Forest (8-4-5, 4-2-2 ACC) Friday night with a 0-1 score.
The pack almost scored in the 16th minute when Tyg Healy fired a low shot into the bottom right corner after deflecting off the Wake defense on a free kick.
No serious scoring attempts were made for either team until the final five minutes of the frame when the Demon Deacons broke through the Red and White defense to force a Logan Erb to make a save and create a corner.
The first half ended goalless from both sides.
The Wolfpack outshot the Demon Deacons 18-12, but were unable to outscore them in terms of shots, recording five compared to Wake’s six.
Erb made a vital save in the 75th minute when Wake Forest was awarded a free kick just outside the top of the box and took advantage of the opportunity to shoot on goal. The shot was aimed for the top right corner but was deflected off the keeper’s upper hand to the side post to clear.
Just a few minutes later the Demon Deacons were able to rally and create another opportunity leading to their goal from a failed clear attempt from the Pack’s back lines.
Healy continued to put the pressure on the keeper after he was awarded a 78th-minute set piece free-kick that went just over the bar.
The goalkeepers of both teams played a crucial role in the highly contested game, recording six saves each.
