The latest ACC expansion becomes real for Duke on Saturday night when SMU comes to Wallace Wade for the first time as a member of the conference. The teams have not played since 1956.
SMU comes against Wally Wade 6-1, with the lone loss coming to BYU (18-15).
Otherwise, though, stopping this team was tough: SMU put up 29 on Nevada, 59 on Houston Christian, 66 on TCU, 42 on Florida State, 34 on Louisville and 40 on Stanford.
Obviously, SMU has an explosive offense and sophomore QB Kevin Jennings is a big reason for that. He’s been killing it since he took over during the BYU game.
Of course, Duke’s defense was great as well. Manny Diaz and Jonathan Patke completely transformed Duke’s defense. They have been aggressive, confident and impressive all season.
Duke’s problem isn’t on defense: the problems come on offense. Duke is inconsistent on offense.
Sure, you can win on defense, but SMU is a really good team and it’s going to take a total team effort to pull off a win.
A solid offense on Saturday would go a long way.
