Birmingham is proud to be home to amazing nonprofits. (KultureCity)

Did you know that one in four people in the US have sensory processing needs? They can affect people with PTSD, autism, dementia, ADHD or strokes.

For these people, ordinary sounds, lights, crowds, and even certain smells can be overwhelming and even physically painful.

KultureCity, the nation’s leading non-profit organization for sensory accessibility and acceptance, is based right here in Birmingham.

With their help, more and more places, organizations and businesses around the world are providing safe spaces for people with sensory needs to decompress from overwhelming sounds and crowds. In fact, they have already helped create over 3,000 sensory spaces in the country.

“I have watched KultureCity grow from a small group with an enthusiastic circle of support in Birmingham to a huge organization shining a light on people with invisible disabilities.

As a restaurant operator for over 40 years, I have personally been fortunate to serve communities that represent all walks of life with all types of experiences. KultureCity provided our team with training to recognize and assist our customers who may need assistance.

Education and outreach are key to this and if we can help KultureCity raise awareness and funds to continue their services, then we want to do so at every opportunity. Birmingham is a city full of beautiful people and places and Pihakis Restaurant Group is proud to sponsor the 5K and 13.1 mile race on November 16, bringing us together for this great cause.”
