The New England Patriots are set to take on the Tennessee Titans in Week 9 of the NFL. However, an even bigger story is what the team will choose to do before Tuesday’s trade deadline.
Over the past few weeks, the Patriots have been one of the most talked about teams in the rumor mill. Many believe they can make a few more moves before the deadline.
Looking at the roster, there are quite a few players that could eventually be moved. There’s also a chance New England chooses to add talent. At this point, there are many different directions the Patriots could choose to go.
One player New England could choose to trade before the deadline is linebacker Davon Godchaux. The 29-year-old doesn’t appear to be a long-term fit for the Patriots, and quite a few contenders around the NFL could use some help on the defensive line.
Cam Garrity from Patriots Wire offered a deal that would have sent Godchaux to the Minnesota Vikings. He had the Vikings acquire Godchaux and send their 2025 fifth-round pick back to New England.
“Godcho is a solid player in a team with very little help on the defensive line. Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores coached Godchaux in Miami from 2019-2020, and then Godchaux went to the Patriots in 2021 in a defense that was run by Bill Belichick,” Garrity wrote. “It makes sense to bring the two back together and give the Vikings another part of their line that can help their defense, allowing them to try out new packages with other linebackers.”
So far this season in eight games with the Patriots, Godchaux has totaled 29 tackles and a pass defense.
At 6-foot-3 and 330 pounds, he is an intimidating physical presence in the middle of the defensive line. He could be a big help for a team that acquires him to fill the game.
New England will have some tough decisions to make. Heading into the future, they must focus on their rebuild around rookie quarterback Drake May.
Going younger now and having long lasting parts instead of losing them as the rebuild progresses would be a wise decision. This makes the Godchaux trade even more meaningful.
Expect to continue to hear rumors surrounding the Patriots before Tuesday. Godchaux looks like a very likely candidate to be moved before the deadline.
