NBA DFS Picks: Building Blocks
last season Kyrie Irving decided to try the normal route and it stayed on an even keel for most of the year. This helped the Mavericks reach the NBA Finals, and while they lost to a select Boston team 4-1, it was great to see Irving and Luka Doncic they almost reach the top of the mountain.
When Irving was on the court without Doncic, the NBA nomad had a 31.9% usage rate, 35.19% assists and a stellar 1.46 fantasy points per minute. Although Irving dropped to 1.13 fantasy points per minute alongside Doncic, they were wobbly during games enough that when both were available, Irving was a solid DFS play.
Klay Thompson is now with the team, which should help keep some of the defensive attention away from Doncic and Irving, but also reduce some of their bulk. Spencer Dinwiddie returns to the city again as the other key addition, p Tim Hardaway Jr., Grant Williams, Derrick Jones Jr., Josh Green and Dante Exum some of the regulars from last year who are now out of the picture.
Thompson turns 35 this winter, and he clearly isn’t the same player he was before his pair of catastrophic injuries cost him nearly 2 1/2 years out of action. Taking the good with the bad, in his last 178 games for Golden State, including 164 starts, Thompson averaged 19.9 points, 3.7 rebounds, 0.6 steals and 0.5 blocks. Most projection systems peg him at something in that range, which should leave Dallas boasting three players averaging 20 points.
PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford will complete the initial unit, with a second year male Derek Lively II the backup big man. The closing unit will evolve depending on the opponent, but this group should get the most minutes. Gafford is injury-prone, so he’ll likely have some busy “chalk nights” this season.
For DFS purposes, there’s the big three and then the frontcourt rotation, with no one else being trusted at this point in the season until the full rotation shakes out or someone misses time.
Victor Wembanyama had some ridiculous games last year and he will likely build on that baseline this season. He’s already a defensive force, and his offensive game will likely continue to improve over the next few seasons. Expect him to be around 20% to 25% of all lineups across DFS sites, making him a good target for tournaments. He should also see increased efficiency with Chris Paul joined the team, and while Paul’s days as a DFS stalwart are long gone, he may still be on the radar for some of the sublists or smaller featured papers. Tonight is a great time to play CP3 as he is rested and more importantly on a decent salary.
Devin Vassell is out, although with the extensive rotation favored at times by coach Gregg Popovich, Keldon Johnson and Jeremy Sochan are just neutral fantasy options, s Tre Jones has minor appeal as a game differentiator in the tournament.

Anthony Edwards dominated the offense on Tuesday, getting 25 field goal attempts, which will likely be close to his baseline now that Carl Anthony-Townes it’s on the Knicks.
Edwards has seen his scoring average increase each of his first four seasons and is likely to finish in the top 10 this year, if not higher.
He also averaged 5.4 rebounds and 5.1 assists last year, which he should easily maintain this season as he continues to level up. The 41 minutes in the opener was definitely an outlier, but 36 minutes per game is in line with what he’s played each of the last two years and in line with expectations tonight.
Donte Di Vincenzo played 32 minutes off the bench and his 11 field goal attempts were second on the team, just ahead of the starter and fellow rookie Julius Randlewho had 10 field goal attempts in 34 minutes. This duo will be key scoring contributors, with Naz Reed entry too.
Foul problems are limited Jaylen McDaniels down to just 16 minutes and it looks like Father Time may be holding on Mike Conley in the 20 to 25 minute range this season. McDaniels is a late target while Rudy Gober should be considered on the presented plate.

Al Horford and the Celtics didn’t have many rebound chances on Tuesday as Boston and the New York Knicks combined for 52.6 percent shooting.
Washington won’t be as accurate and the Wizards aren’t overly imposing in the frontcourt, which has over 5.5 rebounds for Horford to consider tonight.

on Stochastic NBA Advanced Statistical Predictions Horford projected 28.1 minutes and 6.75 rebounds. That’s just over the six needed for this over, and the predicted win rate of 57% is enticing.
Over the last two seasons in Boston, Horford averaged 6.4 and 6.2 rebounds per game in 26.8 and 30.5 minutes. While this game looks like fun, Horford needs to be on the court for at least 25 minutes, and with any luck, he can collect the six caroms needed to overturn this bet.
