Month of Women’s History – Nevada today

March 3, 2025

Dear Wolf Pack family,

March celebrates the month of women’s history, time for us to honor and celebrate the exceptional achievements of women, not only throughout the history of our university, but also in Nevada and beyond.

As we reflect on the remarkable steps achieved by women, it is important to recognize many more women whose contributions are often misunderstood. Since the beginning of our university, women are essential in their growth and will continue to be essential to our thriving future.

Our university has long been home to women’s tracking, each leaving an indelible sign in their respective areas. Some powerful accents include:

  • Louise Fargo Brown, the first woman Dean to be declared a Women’s Dean in 1915.
  • Stella Mason Parson, who in 1952 became the first black woman to once graduated from Nevada College.
  • Effie M. Mak, the first person to receive a PhD in the history of the University of Nevada.
  • Anne Howard, the founder of the Women’s Research Program.
  • Melba Whitaker and Betty Molini, the first female editors of Sagebrush in 1944.
  • Jean Sanford, a pioneer of Carson City, whose vision for adult adults led to the creation of the Sanford Aging Center in 1993.

These are just a few of the many achievements we celebrate this month, remembering the women who have created a way forward for future generations. Our campus community continues to flourish, empowering the female leaders of tomorrow and celebrating women yesterday. Some of the events include:

  • International Symposium for Entrepreneurship for Women To be held on March 14. The sixth annual event will emphasize the role of women’s leadership in dealing with today’s global challenges. Details of the event were sent by email to teachers, staff and students.
  • Enter a girl in the engineering day (At the end of February) led nearly 100 women from high school to explore fields in engineering.
  • International Day of Women’s Day It will be on March 10th. The unit of justice and accessibility of ASUN will distribute flowers from 11am to 2pm at the Breeze of Knowledge Center.
  • Behdel bingo It will be on March 20 from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The event will include showing Jumanji: Welcome to the jungle at the JCSU Theater. Participants will watch the movie while playing Behdel bingo, a fun, engaging way to explore how women are depicted in the media using Behdel’s test.
  • Nevada’s silver lady, Barbara Vukanovic’s exhibition The university libraries and its special collections and the University Archive is a continuous current exhibit for Vukanovic, the first woman from Nevada chosen in the federal service.

Although great progress has been made, it is important to remember that the struggle for gender equality at home, in the workplace and in our society continues. It is up to all of us to unite and move forward, to work in a future in which true equity for all is not just a goal but a reality.

Go to pack!

Sincere wishes,

Brian Sandoval
