Baton Rouge Zydeco News Release

Baton Rouge, La. – The start of Sunday afternoon’s game between Baton Rouge Zydeco and Monroe Moccasins looked like a repeat of Thursday night’s Zydeco. They jumped out to a quick three-goal lead on Monroe, who looked sluggish early on.

Getting the party started was Brody Thornton, who picked the top corner on a 2-on-1 shot for his first career FPHL goal at 8:18. Just two minutes later, Scott Shorrock got a pass at his feet, kicked it to his stick and lofted a backhand just under the arm of Moccasin goalie Sean Kuhn to make it 2-0. Declan Conway grabbed his team’s leading goal of the season with a brilliant individual effort to protect the puck and used his long reach to slip the puck between Kuhn’s pad and the post to give Zydeko a three-goal lead in the first period.

Noah Robinson began his return to Baton Rouge by scoring the first Powerplay goal against Zydeco all season. It was a one-time racket just under the bar to put the moccasins on the board. The first period would end with Zydeco up 3-1.

In the second period, things quieted down a bit as far as offensive chances were concerned. However, it did not subside in the penalty area. Many scuffles and fights after the whistle put players on both sides in the sin bin.

Zydeco was able to regain the three goal lead as Nick Ketola scored his first goal of the season. He positioned himself right at the top of the crease and deflected Jackson Bond’s wrist shot from the blue line to make it 4-1.

1:11 later, Robinson found a soft spot in the middle of the ice and beat Bailey Stevens into the back of the net. The second period ended with Zydeco leading 4-2.

Monroe came out ready to go in the third period and caught Zydeco on their heels. They broke it open with three goals in a span of four and a half minutes to take an unprecedented 5-4 lead. Ben Stefanini, Helmer Oscarsson and Scott Koash are in a sweater with loafers for the first time.

The Zydeco’s finally had the opportunity to get a power play chance given to them by Monroe goaltender Sean Kuhn who gave Declan Conway a face full of gloves in an attempt to cut off his skating path and put his team down a man.

Elijah Wilson, acquired this offseason to be an offensive spark plug for Zydeco, came through in the clutch with a powerplay goal to tie Declan Conway for the team lead in goals.

There was no goal for either team for the rest of regulation time and overtime was very cautious from both sides, with the best chance coming from Nick Ketola’s stick which came off the tops of the circles and was robbed by Sean Kuhn’s glove . Kuhn shook off three goals in the first period and was steady for the Moccasins, stopping 33 of 38 shots.

Bailey Stevens was replaced by Breandon Colgan after Moccasins’ fifth goal. Colgan had just seven shots on net through the remainder of the third period and overtime, but looked calm, cool and collected in goal, making seven saves in his 18:42 of action.

In the shootout, Noah Robinson completed his Baton Rouge comeback by slipping his attempt just under Breandon Colgan’s blocker. Both teams then failed to score and Monroe walked away with 2 points.

The Zydeco’s are back in action against the Mississippi Sea Wolves on Friday at Raising Cane’s River Center, where the Zydeco will be hosting a night to fight cancer. If you can’t join us in person, follow us on YouTube or WBRZ.
