Monarch’s butterflies – public radio Boise State

Not so long ago, a literal carpet of black and orange butterflies would cover part of the United States every year as the monarchs migrated in search of food. But over the last few decades, the number of these emblematic creatures has dropped by 90%, and scientists have voiced the alarm for their future.

Last month, the Fish and Wildlife Service in the United States has started the process of listing monarchs threatened under the Created species Act. Canada has already declared the butterflies at risk.

Emma Pelton, she is a senior biologist for the preservation of endangered species in the Xerces society and joined Idaho to talk more about monarchs and the proposal to protect them.
