The Medicine Horse team explains how equine therapy works
Saddles and bits are not among the tools of the trade. This is not about riding horses. It’s about interaction.
The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors this month awarded a nearly $1.1 million contract to KNC Construction to revitalize the equestrian facilities at Mojave Narrows Regional Park.
The Project and Facilities Management Department is leading the project to restore and expand the park’s equestrian facilities, which are closed due to extensive damage, county officials said.
The county-managed park is located between Spring Valley Lake and Apple Valley, east of the BNSF and Victorville railroad tracks.
The project will include:
- New prefab horseman with four horse boxes
- Storage room
- Two existing horse pens will be demolished and replaced
- New water and electrical improvements
- More water troughs, hanging poles and seating.
Hiking trails: Walk through the often overlooked Mojave Narrows
“Renovations to Mojave Narrows are a vital step in meeting the needs of our diverse and growing visitor base,” said Supervisor Chairman Dawn Rowe. “By improving our equestrian facilities, we’re ensuring that everyone – from experienced riders to families looking for a weekend adventure – can enjoy the full range of what our parks have to offer.”
Mojave Narrows Regional Park is a popular destination for camping, fishing, hiking and other outdoor recreation activities and has seen a significant increase in visitor numbers in recent years.
The addition of the barn and corral will complement the existing horse trails and enhance the park’s features for Victorville residents, campers and day visitors, county officials said.
“Our vision is to honor the legacy of the Mojave Narrows while looking to the future,” said Project Management Manager Sarah Riley. “We want to ensure that every visitor, whether they ride or simply appreciate the equestrian lifestyle, feels welcome and inspired to explore.”
Funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), the project has a budget of $1.9 million.
The revitalization of Mojave Narrows Regional Park is consistent with the countywide vision of connecting and beautifying communities through shared open spaces, county officials said.
