Netflix’s American Manhunt: OJ Simpson includes interviews with key figures involved in the case of double murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Mike Gilbert and Ov Simpson were not only colleagues but very close friends
Mike Gilbert shared that he had always admired Ov Simpson and the man who was the first time they had first contacted while the latter played football for the University of South California. Even then, Gilbert noticed a unique series in it that was impossible to ignore. Over the years, their relationship has intensified, not only professionally but also personally. He became a Simpson sports agent, leading him through a successful NFL career with teams such as buffalo accounts and San Francisco 49ers. Together, they made a great team, overcoming many challenges and reaching many triumphs.
Gilbert and OJ were deeply aware of their personal lives of each other. OJ often showed attachment to Gilbert’s family, such as sending flowers to his daughter and teaching his youngest son, how to play golf. The two were best friends standing next to each other during the main stages of their lives. On June 12, 1994, when Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were found killed in Brentwood, California, Gilbert was out of town on a tourist trip with his son. It is his wife who informed him that OJ is considered a person who is interested in the case. When the footballer failed to surrender to the police on June 17, Gilbert tried to contact him.

However, none of Gilbert’s calls passed, and when he tried to get to OJ in his office, his calls were sent directly to voicemail. He remembered that he thought his friend could not escape and wished at least to talk to him. Knowing Nicole and witnessed the nature of their relationship, he found the situation disturbing. Although during the process he was not engaged strongly or in the spotlight, he later shared his perspective in his 2008 book. “How I helped OJ get out of murder: the shocking internal story of violence, loyalty, loyalty regret and remorse. ” The book provided an in -depth story about his relationship with OJ, as well as his insights on the case and the process.
In the book, Gilbert made several allegations, one of which was that his advice played a major role in the scandalous demonstration of gloves. He claims that while meeting with OJ and his legal team, he suggested that the latter stop taking his medication for arthritis. They knew that he would be asked to try the gloves, and the swollen hands due to inflammation could make the gloves look too small. However, later, court documents revealed that OJ’s medicines were taken into account when he was asked to put on the gloves. Following the acquittal, Gilbert claims he had a conversation with OJ, during which his friend supposedly admitted to the killings.
Mike Gilbert leads a retired and peaceful life now
Mark Gilbert has already been retired as a sports agent and is still inhabited in California. He has often discussed the case in various documentaries and interviews. In a recent interview in 2024, he claimed that during the month leading to the killings, Ov Simpson was on severe drugs for several mental health problems. He claims that at that time exceeding athletes was common and also suggested that his former colleague was using various substances. He continues to stand at his belief that OH had committed the killings, maintaining that he had personally heard his confession.
In another interview, Gilbert discussed the incident in September 2007 at a hotel and casino at Palace Station in Las Vegas, Nevada. He admitted that he worked with OJ to preserve some memorials, believing that she rightly belongs to her children, not to the gold. Gilbert revealed that he had stored some of these items in renting a storage space, but later discovered that things were related without his knowledge. He is said to have been the source of some memorials involved in the charges of robbery and theft against OJ, but no charges were filed against him. Gilbert expressed remorse to help his friend, although OJ’s lawyers rejected all his claims.
