Miami man to stand trial in 2016 kidnapping, death of mother, daughter – WPEC

A Miami man could face life in prison or the death penalty if convicted in the kidnapping and death of a mother and daughter.

The indictment unsealed Tuesday details the events of May 30, 2016, when Gustavo Alfonso Castano Restrepo allegedly kidnapped 41-year-old Liliana Moreno near the Home Depot on Okeechobee Road in Hialeah. Tragically, the kidnapping resulted in the deaths of both Moreno and her 8-year-old daughter, Daniela, according to the US Department of Justice (DOJ).

According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, Restrepo is accused of using Moreno for “reward or otherwise” and using various means of interstate commerce, including a cell phone, the Internet, a motor vehicle and the Florida Homestead Extension. time of the crime.

After Tuesday’s court hearing, Restrepo was taken into custody, according to the DOJ. A pretrial detention hearing is scheduled for Nov. 1. If convicted, the DOJ said the 55-year-old faces a mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison, with the maximum penalty being death.
