Laredo, Texas (KGNS) – It has been nearly two weeks since the Mexican National Guard set up a checkpoints along the US -Mexico border.
Many who travel through our sister city in Laredo express their concerns about the delays caused by the checkpoints. However, the military is using new technology to speed up their check.
The Secure Border Operation, also known as the Frontera Seguara, is in full effect on the US -Mexico border. In Nuevo Laredo, Mexican National Guards such as Ricardo Lopez Palafox have already seen the results of the operation.
“We arrived on this bridge on February 8 and so far US customs have not reported illegal drugs arriving through their country,” Palafox said.
For drivers, in -depth checks on the Mexican side of the bridges cause a delay that take several hours.
Drivers from other border cities, such as reynosa, claim that checks have caused up to four to six -hour delays.
While drivers call checks a waste of time, Palafox assures that using new technology helps with checks.
Noting: “We use a robot called Proscan, which scans the frame of each vehicle. We also have a set that checks for compartments where medicines can be hidden. “
Checks are now reflected in international trade and the flow of trade, according to some Mexican officials, including the President of the Council of Nuevo Laredo Institutions, Francisco Meja.
“We agree with the checks. However, we need to reach an agreement on how to maintain the order and flow of traffic movement, “Mejja said.
Currently, 10,000 Mexican National Guards are located in 18 cities and cities as part of the US tariff delay deal.
